He is best known for his work with the group Aventura, which popularized the Dominican genre of bachata in the US and worldwide. He has also had a successful solo career, collaborating with artists such as Drake, Usher, Enrique Iglesias, and Marc Anthony. In this blog post, we will explore some of the highlights of his musical journey and his impact on Latin music.

Romeo Santos was born Anthony Santos on July 21, 1981, in The Bronx, New York. His parents are both from the Dominican Republic, and he grew up listening to bachata, merengue, salsa, and hip hop. He started singing in a church choir at the age of 12, and later formed a group with his cousin Henry Santos and friends Lenny and Max Santos. They called themselves Los Tinellers (a Dominican slang term for teenagers) and released an album titled Trampa de Amor in 1995.

The group changed their name to Aventura in 1999 and experimented with fusing bachata with other genres such as R&B, pop, and rap. Their breakthrough came in 2002 with the song “Obsesión”, which became a hit in Europe and Latin America. The song featured a catchy hook sung by Judy Santos (no relation to Romeo) and a rap verse by Don Omar. Aventura went on to release five more albums, including God’s Project (2005), K.O.B. Live (2006), The Last (2009), and 14+14 (2011). Some of their most popular songs include “Un Beso”, “Mi Corazoncito”, “Los Infieles”, “El Perdedor”, and “Dile al Amor”.

In 2011, Romeo Santos announced that he was leaving Aventura to pursue a solo career. He released his debut album Formula, Vol. 1 in November of that year, which featured collaborations with Lil Wayne, Pitbull, Mario Domm, and Tomatito. The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Latin Album. The lead single “You” topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for eight weeks, followed by “Promise” featuring Usher, which also reached number one.

Romeo Santos continued his solo success with Formula, Vol. 2 in 2014, which featured guest appearances by Drake, Nicki Minaj, Carlos Santana, Tego Calderón, and Kevin Hart. The album sold over 85,000 copies in its first week, making it the highest debut for a Latin album in over six years. It also spawned four number one singles: “Propuesta Indecente”, “Odio” featuring Drake, “Eres Mía”, and “Yo También” featuring Marc Anthony.

In 2017, Romeo Santos released his third solo album Golden, which celebrated his 36th birthday and marked his 20th anniversary in the music industry. The album featured collaborations with Daddy Yankee, Nicky Jam, Ozuna, Julio Iglesias, Jessie Reyez, and Anuel AA. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single “Héroe Favorito” became his eighth number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart.

In addition to his musical achievements, Romeo Santos has also ventured into acting and producing. He made his film debut in Furious 7 (2015), playing the role of Armando Mendoza. He also appeared in Angry Birds (2016) as the voice of Early Bird. He executive produced the documentary series Romeo Santos: Utopia Live from MetLife Stadium (2019), which chronicled his historic concert at the New Jersey venue where he reunited with Aventura and performed with other bachata legends.
